There was a great deal of ceremony and ritual relating to newborns in
Ancient Greece. In such a make dominated society, having a child was
one of the only ways for a woman to gain status and importance.
Not quite the model baby shower, but around a week after the birth, the father of the child would walk
around the hearth several times, while holding the baby - to symbolize
the integration of the new life into the family and household.
Like in Ancient Egypt, the Greeks also believed a woman who had given
birth had a period of impurity, in which she must be kept isolated.
However, after ten days, she would be deemed to have 'recovered' and
would be welcomed back into society with a meal with family and friends.
At this meal, gifts would be dedicated to the birth Goddess
Eileithyia. Items would usually be aimed more at the woman than the
child, with items associated with the changed body shape - such as
dresses and girdles. Subtle hint, anyone?

Giving your baby the best start in life - with non-cognitive skills
Experts are always trying to find out how to improve education and the outcomes for our children.
In the past, education has tended to focus on cognitive
skills – these tend to be fact-based subjects, such as maths, English, art, things like
that.
However, as more research is done and experiments are
carried out with different interventions with kids at different ages and with
different levels of wealth and varying levels of home stability, interesting
facts are beginning to emerge.
Researchers are finding that it’s not the cognitive skills
which are the most important for the success of a person as they grow into adulthood
and progress through their career. In fact, it’s non-cognitive skills that have
a much stronger effect on a person’s earnings, family stability and
relationship success. Non-cognitive skills are things like communication,
empathy, ability to compromise - also sometimes called soft skills.
The good news is that these skills can be taught, and that
parents can have a great effect and help their children have the best start in
life.
The evidence points to what you would intuitively think –
that being in a loving, calm environment with parents who set a good example will help the child’s brain develop
the right networks to help it deal with all kinds of situations in later life.
It’s important to play with your child, giving it lots of
interaction, and teaching it to be patient and able to compromise and not be devastated if it loses a game. Evidence shows that
children that are able to delay gratification bring that skill with them into
adulthood, with excellent benefits.
Reading to your child helps build the bond of closeness, and
shielding them from family instability, stress and arguments will have invaluable effects later on in
life.
At Personalised Baby Gifts we
offer a range of beautiful unique baby gifts, including personalised storybooks which can help you bond with your child unique jigsaw puzzles to help stimulate its mental and physical
development and engraved money boxes to help teach it the importance of delayed
gratification.

History of the Baby Shower - Part One: Baby Showers in Ancient Egypt
WARNING - the history of the baby shower is not all sweetness and
light! If you're squeamish and easily grossed out, it's probably best to stick to reading about modern baby showers. However, if you want all the gritty details, read on...
If you'r rather just look at cute baby gifts, click here instead...
Various ceremonies and traditions were followed, such as forcing mother and child to live apart from the rest of society for two weeks.
There was also ritualised disposal of the afterbirth, with some evidence that this may have taken place at shrines and temples. Lovely!
There may have been 'festivals' or parties following the birth of a
child, where the baby would be officially named - so quite similar to a modern naming day or baby shower.
Friends and family would be invited to join in welcoming the new life into the world, and if the family were important, strangers may also come to pay their respects. The size and elaborateness of these would have been reflected by the social standing of the family - the bigger the party, the more important the baby!
If you're continuing with this ancient tradition of celebrating the birth of a new life with a party (and presents!), then why not check out our personalised baby gifts website?

What is a baby shower?
Baby showers are becoming more and more popular, but what exactly is a baby shower?
The modern baby shower is a gathering of people to celebrate a new life coming into the world. It often takes place shortly before the baby is born, with close friends and family of the expectant mother coming together and usually bringing gifts for mother and the unborn baby.
It's popular to have a theme to the baby shower, such as animals, pirates or cupcakes (sure, cupcakes can be a theme!). Decorations, food and games can all be made to match the theme.
A frilly umbrella is often the symbol of baby showers, and that's because baby showers (in their modern format) became popularised in Victorian times, when parasols were a popular fashion accessory so the ladies didn't end up flushed in the hot sun : )
Having said that, giving gifts at baby showers has been a custom since ancient Greek times. Back then, gifts would usually be handmade, so they would almost certainly be unique and personalised.
There are a few differences between ancient and modern baby shower. Firstly, celebrations of new births would usually take place after the birth of a child, not before, as they do now. Secondly, it was usually a female only affair - men wouldn't want to get involved in such things!
Also, in the past new birth celebrations weren't always the civilized, fluffy things they are now. For quite a long time giving birth was considered 'unclean' and women were often forced to stay away from the rest of the community for a fixed period,
I, for one, am glad those days are over!
We offer a wide range of personalised baby gifts, including engraved trinket boxes, baby name door plaques and personalised jigsaw puzzles to help develop mind and dexterity.
Check out our personalised baby gifts site to find out more about the history of baby shower gifts and browse our range of baby gifts.
